Meet the Boss

Woman on rocks in Eagle Lake, Alaska

Hello! I’m Lisa Maloney, author of “50 Hikes Around Anchorage” from Countryman Press, with a second guidebook on the way (this time for Mountaineers Books). I wasn’t born in Alaska, but I’m going on 27 years here — I’m pretty sure that once my odometer clicks over to 30 years, I’ll no longer qualify as a cheechako.

I make my living as a full-time freelance writer, editor and reporter. Hiking isn’t the only thing I write about (or do), but it is my first love and my favorite way to spend my time. I’m pretty darn lucky that about half the time my office looks like this, and I can’t wait to share my favorite places with you.

Tundra, forest and lake in Alaska

The instructional content you’ll find here is geared specifically toward Alaska, but let’s face it — what works up here will work almost anywhere… with appropriate modifications to suit the local climate, of course! I’ll also post information on local trails and, because I love to travel, I’m looking forward to publishing some Hiking Alaska “field trips” as well.

With that said, I need your help! Don’t see what you’re looking for? Please let me know — you can leave a comment, email me, or talk to me on Facebook, Twitter, and maybe Instagram soon (if I can just get over my resistance to using tech in the wilderness…)

P.S. I fell into the lake in that first picture and because we had a crazy hot summer (by Alaska standards, anyway) it felt great! Next time we have a streak of 80-plus-degree days, I’m going to jump into every glacier-fed lake I see.
